Physical Activity opportunities at Hamble
Within our PE curriculum, we make links to our threads of equality, democracy, sustainability and life on a river by offering a wide range of physical activities. We provide the children with the opportunity to engage in sailing, where they find out more about river life and how we can participate in alternative physical activities in a collaborative and respectful way.
Here at Hamble, we provide a wide range of opportunities for our students to participate in enrichment experiences including intra- and inter- house sports competitions, school tournaments and sports days, in addition to our curriculum offer.
These purposeful experiences allow children to apply their learning in new contexts, develop confidence and enhance their emotional resilience whilst belonging to their school house team.
Raising the Profile of PE and Sport
We actively raise the profile of PE and sport across the school by welcoming visitors, athletes, coaches and community organisations who inspire our children and demonstrate the positive impact of physical activity. These experiences help children see sport as an important part of school life and support whole-school improvement by promoting positive behaviour, increasing attendance and enhancing academic outcomes through improved wellbeing and engagement. By participating in special events, such as welcoming ceremonies and community sporting celebrations, pupils develop pride in their school, strengthen connections with the wider community and gain memorable experiences that motivate them to lead active and healthy lifestyles.

Sports Day
Sports Day is a valued event in the Hamble Primary School calendar, providing all pupils with the opportunity to celebrate physical activity, teamwork and personal achievement. Through a range of inclusive athletic and team-based events, children are encouraged to challenge themselves, demonstrate perseverance and apply the skills they have developed throughout their PE lessons. Representing their school houses, pupils experience a sense of belonging and pride while developing respect, sportsmanship and encouragement for others. Sports Day promotes healthy competition in a supportive environment, ensuring that every child can experience success, build confidence and enjoy being active alongside their peers, families and the wider school community.
Residential Experiences and Active Engagement
Our residential visits provide children with exciting opportunities to be physically active, develop independence and challenge themselves in new environments. Activities such as climbing, hiking, team-building challenges and outdoor adventure pursuits encourage all pupils to engage in regular physical activity while developing resilience, confidence and teamwork skills. These experiences support our commitment to helping children achieve the recommended 60 active minutes each day and demonstrate how being active can be enjoyable, rewarding and part of everyday life. Residential visits also foster positive relationships, personal growth and a lifelong appreciation for healthy, active living.
Sailing and Life on the River
Sailing provides a unique opportunity for pupils to bring our Life on the River thread to life through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Making full use of our riverside location, children develop sailing skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the River Hamble and its importance to the local community, environment and economy. Through sailing activities, pupils learn about water safety, navigation, weather conditions and caring for river habitats, helping them to develop a sense of responsibility and respect for their local environment. As they work collaboratively to sail and solve challenges on the water, children build confidence, resilience and teamwork skills whilst developing a strong connection to the river that plays such an important role in the identity of Hamble.
Inclusion in Physical Education and Sport
At Hamble Primary School, inclusion is at the heart of our PE and sport provision. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to participate, achieve and enjoy physical activity, regardless of their ability, background or experience. Through carefully planned lessons, adapted activities and a broad range of sporting opportunities, we ensure that all pupils can access and engage in physical education in a way that meets their individual needs. We also provide Sensory Circuits for children who benefit from additional sensory and physical regulation, helping them to prepare for the school day and be ready to learn. These structured activities support children in developing focus, coordination, balance and self-regulation, enabling them to access learning more successfully. We celebrate effort, progress and personal achievement, creating a supportive environment where children feel confident to take risks, challenge themselves and develop a positive attitude towards being active. By promoting respect, teamwork and equality, we help every child feel valued, included and empowered to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
Developing Sports Leaders
At Hamble Primary School, we are committed to developing leadership skills through our Year 5 Young Leaders unit within the PE curriculum. This unit provides children with the opportunity to develop their own ideas and begin to demonstrate key leadership qualities, including communication, organisation, responsibility and teamwork. Pupils learn how to plan, deliver and evaluate physical activities for younger children, gaining valuable experience of leading and supporting others. Through working with Key Stage 1 pupils, they build confidence and develop an understanding of how to adapt activities to meet the needs of different participants.
Following this unit, selected pupils take on the role of Sports Leaders, becoming positive role models who actively promote physical activity across the school. They support and encourage participation during playtimes and sporting events, helping to create a positive culture around physical activity. As a culmination of their leadership journey, Sports Leaders play a key role in organising and hosting the Key Stage 1 Sports Day, demonstrating the skills, confidence and responsibility they have developed while inspiring younger pupils to enjoy being active.
Football Team Development
At Hamble Primary School, we are proud to provide opportunities for pupils to represent the school through our boys’ and girls’ football teams. Led by dedicated staff coaches, Mr Turner, Mrs Knight and Mrs Woodley, training sessions enable children to develop their technical skills, tactical understanding, teamwork and sportsmanship in a supportive and encouraging environment. Through regular training and fixtures, the children have learnt the importance of resilience, respect and cooperation, while experiencing the pride of representing their school and being part of a team. These opportunities help to foster a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and inspire pupils to continue participating in sport both within and beyond school.
Swimming
Swimming is a vital part of our Physical Education curriculum, equipping children with an essential life skill while promoting confidence, safety and lifelong participation in physical activity. Through high-quality swimming lessons, pupils develop water confidence, learn important water safety knowledge and progressively build their swimming techniques. We recognise the importance of our riverside location and ensure that children understand how to stay safe in and around water. Swimming provides an opportunity for all children to challenge themselves, develop resilience and experience success in an activity that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.

Physical Activity Beyond the School Day
At Hamble Primary School, we recognise the importance of developing active lifestyles that extend beyond the school gates and support children’s long-term health and wellbeing. We actively encourage pupils and their families to engage in regular physical activity outside of school through initiatives such as Walk to School Week and Cycle to School Week, promoting active travel as a healthy, sustainable and enjoyable way to be active each day. We are also fortunate to have a public park adjacent to our school site, which is regularly used by many of our children before and after school. We encourage families to make use of this valuable community space, providing opportunities for children to play, socialise, explore and be physically active in an informal setting. By promoting active habits beyond the curriculum, we aim to help children understand that physical activity can be an enjoyable and important part of everyday life.
