A very warm welcome to our Hamble Primary School community!
![]()
We are delighted that you and your child will be joining our school community and we can't wait to welcome you to Year R. Starting school is a very exciting milestone, and we look forward to working together to ensure your child's first school experience is happy, positive and full of wonderful opportunities to learn and grow.
We hope you have been able to visit us during one of our settling-in sessions this summer. If you haven't, or if you have any questions, please don't worry—we are always happy to help.
You can contact us through the Contact Us section of our website or by emailing the school office at:
admin@hamble-pri.hants.sch.uk.
As you explore our website, you'll discover more about our school's values, nurturing ethos and inspiring curriculum. We are incredibly proud of the rich learning experiences we provide and of the kindness, confidence and enthusiasm our children demonstrate every day.
To help your child begin to feel familiar with school, we have also included a special video of me sharing a story. We hope you enjoy watching it together over the summer and that it helps your child get to know a friendly face before they start their exciting journey at Hamble Primary School.
Below you will find a special welcome from our Year R Leader, Miss Hall, along with the presentation shared during our New Year R Welcome Evening. We hope these resources help you and your child begin to feel part of the Hamble Primary community before September.
We understand that starting school is a significant step for both children and parents, and we are here to support you every step of the way. No question is too small, so please do get in touch if there is anything we can help with.
We are looking forward to meeting you all and welcoming you to Hamble Primary School.
With our very best wishes,
Claire Hewitt
Headteacher
At Hamble Primary School, we recognise that starting school is a significant milestone in every child's life. Our transition process begins long before a child's first day in September. We work closely with children, families, early years settings and other professionals to ensure every child feels known, safe, valued and ready to begin their journey with us.
Your journey to Hamble!
1. School place offered.
2. Come and visit us the school at one of our open days.
3. We work with your nursery/preschool and visit children in their settings.
We recognise that children's current early years practitioners know them incredibly well. Our Reception team therefore works closely with nurseries, preschools and childminders before children start school.
We share information about children's interests, learning, communication, friendships and development and discuss any support or strategies already in place.
Where appropriate, members of our Year R team visit children within their current early years setting. This gives us an opportunity to see children playing and learning in an environment in which they already feel safe and confident.
4. Meet your new teachers at our welcome meeting.
5. Stay and play sessions (2 with parents and 1 without).
6. Stories, photographs and resources to explore at home.
7. Home visits to see the children in their own environment.
8. Your first days at Hamble Primary School.
9. Supporting you to settle.
10. Welcome to the Hamble Primary School community!
Getting to know your child
Every child is unique.
Before children begin at Hamble, we take time to understand the child behind the name. Through conversations with families, home visits and communication with previous early years settings, we find out about children's interests, strengths, friendships, communication, experiences and individual needs.
This information helps us prepare our environment and provision so that children arrive at a school where they already feel known.

Look through our Starting School Social Story together as often as your child would like. Seeing familiar adults, places and routines before September can help children know what to expect and feel more confident about starting school.

Home visits
Why do we visit you at home?
Home visits give us an invaluable opportunity to meet your child in a place where they feel comfortable and secure. They allow us to begin building relationships with children and families before the first day of school and give parents an opportunity to share the things that are important to their child.
The information you share helps us understand how best to support your child as they make the transition into school.
05.09.26 update: It has been an absolute pleasure meeting you all this week in the children's home environment. This is a great opportunity for you all to get to know the adults that will be in the environment and supporting your children as they settle into school life. We have attached the documents provided at the home visits for your reference.
Every child is different
We know that some children need additional support to make a successful transition into school. We work with families, early years settings, our SENDCo and other professionals to plan transition around the individual child.
This may include: additional visits • quieter visits • photographs/social stories • visual supports • meeting key adults several times • SENDCo involvement • liaison with external professionals • individual transition plans • adaptations to the environment.
Helping your child feel ready
Ready for school checklist
During the summer you could practise:

Please don't worry if your child can't do all of these yet. Children develop at different rates and we will continue supporting these skills when they start school.
What will my first week look like?
Home visits → first 3/4 sessions 9-12pm → first lunch 9-1pm → building to full days
During children's first weeks at Hamble, our priority is building secure relationships and helping children feel safe, happy and confident within their new environment. We spend time learning routines, exploring our provision, developing friendships and getting to know one another.
