Sustainability at HPS

Our School Sustainability Vision

At our school, we want to create a future where our children learn, grow, and thrive in a healthy, responsible, and caring environment. Sustainability sits at the heart of this vision. It means making thoughtful choices today that protect our world for tomorrow—so our pupils inherit a planet and a community they can be proud of.

We understand sustainability through four key pillars:

  • Decarbonisation – reducing the carbon emissions linked to how we heat, power, and run our school. This includes saving energy, reducing waste, and making more climate-friendly choices in our daily routines.

  • Biodiversity – protecting and improving nature in and around our school grounds by creating spaces where plants, insects, and wildlife can thrive.

  • Adaptation and resilience – preparing our school and community to cope with the changing climate, including extreme weather, while making our environment safer and more sustainable.

  • Climate education and green careers – helping pupils understand climate change, sustainability, and the growing range of careers that support a greener future.

To turn this vision into action, we have set up both an Eco-Team and a Sustainability Team made up of staff and pupils. These groups will lead projects, raise awareness, and encourage positive habits across the school. By involving pupils directly, we empower them to take responsibility and understand how their actions can make a real difference.

Our work is guided by our Climate Action Plan, which helps us make informed decisions about how we reduce carbon emissions, improve our use of energy and resources, and care for our environment. From improving recycling and reducing waste, to enhancing our outdoor spaces and saving energy, we are committed to meaningful and lasting change.

We also recognise that sustainability reaches beyond the school gates. We aim to work with families and the local community to share ideas, encourage sustainable habits, and make a positive contribution to our local area.

Through learning, action, and teamwork, we are building a school culture where sustainability is part of everyday life—preparing our children not only for their future, but for the future of the world around them.

Green Tree School Award

I am delighted to announce that Hamble Primary School has achieved both the Bronze and Silver Green Tree School Awards. We have worked incredibly hard to make our school a more sustainable and environmentally friendly place and receiving these awards recognises the fantastic efforts of our pupils and staff. It is wonderful for the children to see that their actions are making a real and positive difference.

Fundraising!

As a school, we are committed to increasing the biodiversity across our site. So far, we have planted new trees and created dedicated “no mow” areas to encourage wildlife and support local ecosystems. Our next goal is to raise funds for a school pond, which will provide even more opportunities for nature to thrive and for children to learn about the environment firsthand.

To launch our fundraising campaign, the Eco-Team organised a plant sale at our Christmas Fair, which was a great success. More recently, the children wrote to a range of local businesses to ask for donations and support. They thoroughly enjoyed every part of the process — from writing the letters, to buying stamps, and even posting them in the postbox themselves. It has been a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop their confidence, communication skills, and understanding of community involvement.
